In addition to elevator shafts, more and more smoke extraction shafts are being used in multi-story buildings, which enhance the safety of existing stairwells, especially in renovation projects. So-called pressure ventilation systems create an overpressure in the stairwell and existing smoke can be discharged from the neighboring corridors upwards via these smoke extraction shafts.
With their openings in the facade and roof, both types of shaft are important components in modern smoke extraction concepts. Due to statutory requirements for energy saving in buildings, permanent openings are no longer permitted in many countries and therefore require an automated electric motor-driven closure. Depending on the legal situation in the individual countries, the products used require national approval or at least proof of suitability. SIMON PROtec offers various products and solutions for this purpose, depending on which best suits the project.
The SHEV-FLAP smoke and heat exhaust system is tested and certified as a natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilator (NSHEV) in accordance with DIN EN 12101-2. The horizontally installed louvre window, in combination with the thermally insulated and thermally separated upstand, provides an ideal building closure for flat roofs. The SHEV-FLAP is available in standard sizes for elevator shafts, but also in individual sizes for pressure ventilation systems. The element ensures smoke extraction independent of wind direction. Alternatively, the louvre system can also be used vertically in the facade and can be adapted to specific projects.
For control, SIMON PROtec offers the SHEV-3-LIFT compact control unit for elevator shafts, the ideal centerpiece for implementing the building regulations in Austria and neighboring countries. For smoke protection pressurized systems and pressure ventilation systems, the digital, modular control panel M-SHEV offers a wide range of configuration options. In addition to the classic triggering of the connected actuators by pole reversal, it is also possible to control them by pressure sensor and to operate connected fans and ventilators according to specification. For the requirement of a wind direction-independent control of facade windows, the M-SHEV can be equipped with sensors for orientation.
Both systems are CE certified according to DIN EN 12101-10 as a construction product and additionally internationally tested according to ISO 21927-9 as a control panel. The SHEV-3-LIFT has been tested by DEKRA in Vienna for use as a smoke extraction and ventilation system for elevator shafts. Due to the basic functions of the well-known SHEV-3 stairway control panel, all SIMON PROtec products are compatible with the SHEV-3-LIFT. In addition to smoke detectors, smoke aspiration systems or laser-based smoke detection systems (BEAM) can also be used. With an integrated timer, the SHEV-3-LIFT ensures sufficient ventilation and exhaust as specified.

Elevator shaft with the SHEV-FLAP smoke extraction element as a closure. This solution provides a weather-protected opening that ensures smoke extraction independent of wind direction as well as natural ventilation. It can also be used as a relief opening for pressure ventilation systems in stairwells.
The SHEV-FLAP consists of a straight, 50 cm high thermally insulated upstand and an integrated, tested NSHEV louvre element with attached weather protection louvre hood. In the process of engineering, particular attention was paid to a clean thermal separation from the point of view of building physics. The element is available in various standard sizes as well as made to measure.
